Gabriel was born in Romania in the era where Communism made it prohibitive to listen or transmit via amateur radio.  Eager to hear news from the outside, he listened to Radio-Free-Europe and Voice-of-America by disguising an antenna to make it look like a clothesline.  He still remembers the bands that were used.  In that era you could not get a license to transmit unless it was for official government service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel got his education in his home country, then moved to America.  He instantly got his Amateur radio license, as he was excited to be able to do so.  First he tried mobile DX at home with his compromised setup.  With a wire antenna hidden in the trees he got over 200 DX entities, then went mobile from his car.  This allowed him to become one of the very early members of the mobile DXCC.  After a bit he tried POTA (Parks on the Air), then heard about SOTA.  He says the rules for SOTA sounded so complicated that he was all in. Gabriel earned the title of Mountain Goat on 13-Jun-2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel always hikes with his two children, Sophie KO6MFP (age 11) and Alex KO6MFO (9).\u00a0 He says if that they had been licensed on all their early hikes, then they would both be Mountain Goats by now.\u00a0 Now that they are both licensed and know CW, they are 15% of the way there.\u00a0 But since they all love hiking and the outdoors, they just might become the youngest to earn this title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
