UPDATE: 01/15/2026.  The last section of road to the top now requires serious off-road capabilities due to large ravines being created in the road.  (See last picture).  

I drove in with Ted, W6TED. This use to be a simple driveup with park, setup activate, but the road is deteriorating.

We came from from Hwy 74 and noticed that the road is worse than last year. 6S13 continues to get worse and I suggest a good clearance vehicle. I might make it in my Highlander but wouldn't want to. We were using Ted's tricked out Land Cruiser with 35" tires, and lots of clearance.

There are some awesome views from the summit and the activation zone is huge, allowing enough space for multiple opps.

As of 12/16/2025, the turn off to Thomas Mountain Lookout road REQUIRED an overlanding vehicle. You can park at the turn and hike the last mile to the top if you don't have a good enough vehicle.

Check with others on road conditions from others before you leave.
