This is probably one of the best hikes to take in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and the trail takes you right by a SOTA summit.  The trail is not the usual SoCal PCT hard pan, but a soft enjoyable semi-sand trail.  You never really get into anything very steep so it makes it that much more enjoyable.  The trail is well worn and easy to follow.  We took basically the route charted in download below and the distance and elevation gain comes from my Apple Watch (which matched Ted’s exactly).  There’s a bit of elevation gain on the way back but it’s enjoyable.

The views are awesome and as a bonus, you get a POTA activation out of it.

The activation zone is pretty big.  I setup on the summit, but there was plenty of room in the AZ, where Ted enjoyed some epic views as well.

I did this summit with Ted, W6TED at the end of December.  The weather was overcast and about 53 deg f, absolutely perfect for a hike out in the desert.  If I had to choose my favorate hike in this area, this is it.  Bill, N6MTB, who did this two days before us, agrees.
