We camped at San Mateo Campground, located within San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente. From here it was a short 20-minute drive to the trailhead. It was fun watching the sun set in the Pacific. We had good success reaching San Diego on 2m, but failed to reach anyone North of us. See our full trip report

I've updated the trailhead, park in the col-de-sac and .4 mi walk up a paved trail.
It has a great view of San Clemente, and the ocean
It has a picnic table in the AZ or you can go to the very top (50 yds) away, sit down and enjoy the best views.
Then go to lunch at Fisherman's Restaurant & Bar in San Clamente
