Steep mountain bike ride on a paved road
Friday evening, August 8, 2025. We left from our campsite at Pasa Picacho Campground (#8). Although this is a paved road to the summit, only emergency and service vehicles are allowed. Instead we took our mountain bikes, leaving at 4:30 pm to avoid the mid-day sun, and stopping every 0.5 mi to catch our breath. The road ended at a large dirt pad. There was a commercial antenna above us but didn’t seem to interfere with our communications. We were successful at making a dozen 2m/FM contacts into both San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties. This was using a 5W HT (Yaesu FT-60R) and a 4-element Yagi. We gripped the brakes the entire way down. W6/SC-029 Stonewall Peak and W6/SC-024 Middle Peak were also done on this trip.
