Saturday, July 26, 2025. We parked a mile from the summit, at 37.79277, -118.89836. We could have driven the entire way, but other activation reports said the road was not passable. We were happy we stopped when we did, as the last mile had a tall ridge in the center of the road. We saw a few motorcycles and ATVs ("side-by-sides") drive to the summit, and the volunteer here drove a 4Runner to the top.
At the summit there is a lookout tower, first noted on a 1935 Inyo National Forest map. The top was a small 10x10 ft room, the bottom a residence with propane fridge and stove. The lookout tower is manned by volunteers, traveling from elsewhere to spend a few days here. Robert, a retired Forest Service fireman, had arrived on Thursday and was to hand over the shift to the next volunteers in a few hours. We enjoyed talking to him for probably an hour. He lives in Sierra Madre and described how the Eaton Fire came within 9 ft of his house. Since he was a former fireman, he had several fire units parked at his house during this event. He talked about emergency preparedness, including leaving the lights on during a fire. Fireman will go to the house with the lights on first, so they can see.
