Had a fantastic day 8/16/25 doing a SOTA activation on Angel Island (W6/CC-075 Mount Caroline Livermore) with Jim KB6ZOP and Julie N6EKO (and my 2 boys). To top it off, we also did a POTA activation of the park (US-1123). We took the 10AM ferry from Tiburon to Angel Island on a beautiful day, with the fog layer very thick. Upon our arrival, we asked a ranger about the best hiking route to reach the summit. He recommended we take the North Ridge Trail up, as it has a lot of stairs near the beginning and the Sunset Trail down, since it has a gentle slope with lots of switchbacks. We followed his advice and were happy we did. On the way up, we noticed the summit was covered in fog. A bit later, after a lovely hike up, the fog had cleared nicely for us. We set up in a nice area with picnic tables very near the summit inside the activation zone. We had a fun picnic lunch (dodging sweat bees, who desperately wanted our food) and set up for the activation. We started on 2m with the Kenwood HTs. Jim set up his Elk antenna and then acted as a human rotor for the activation (I wish I took photos). We added HF a little while later with a KX-2 running into a random wire up a SOTABeams mast. It became a bit of a circus with chasers responding to our CQs like crazy on both VHF and HF, with the 3 of us scrambling around to make contacts with all the incoming calls. We logged about a dozen QSOs with a few summit to summits and park to parks and decided to head down. About this same time, the fog rolled in and that was the end of the views from the summit. We packed up and headed down. Once back at the bay, we watched some children playing in the water at the beach and got some refreshments at the concession area, where we sat and enjoyed the lovely weather and scenery. We hopped on the 4:20PM ferry back to Tiburon and all agreed that it had been a fantastic outing. My GPS showed 5.2 miles of hiking and 1100 feet of elevation gain (despite the summit being at 781 feet).
