This is a simple desert walk (non-bushwhack) with a round trip hike of 2 mi and 530 ft of climbing to the top (550 ft total given our descent included some up and down). Because of the limited growth, we weren’t really having to crash brush.
Ted (W6TED) and I left San Diego at about 5:30 and headed out to Joshua National Park to hit a couple of summits. We had plans for three summits but were unable to do all three. With the rush hour traffic it took us about 2.5 hours to get to the starting point for W6/SD-044, a no-name summit.
Ted had done this one before, so he knew what areas to avoid so he took the lead. The hike was pretty simple but avoiding any major rock climbing to the south-west side.
HF conditions were awesome and I worked England, Spain, Switzerland, and France. I enjoyed a PB&J sandwich on the summit and took a quick nap while I waited for Ted to finish.
Overall, we both enjoyed the hike and nothing about it was really all that difficult. This was my first time visiting Joshua Tree National Park and it well worth the visit given that these cactus trees only grow in this area and the views were awesome!
I've attached out track on the way down to give you an idea of how we did this one.
