Sunday, July 27, 2025. For the route we took we exited Hwy 395 at Substation road. We then drove 5.5 mi on the Forest Service road, to an intersection with another road that headed towards the peak. Not knowing the road condition, we parked at this intersection, at 37.68040, -118.87395 and hiked 1.8 mi. (During the hike we observed we could have driven an additional 0.5 mi, parking at 37.67445, -118.86858.) As we approached the summit, the road turned into a trail and climbed to the peak. The summit was a large flat area, mixed rock and small plants. We enjoyed this hike. When we finished we drove an additional 0.25 mi to the site of the Huntley Kaolinite Mine. There is not much to see from the road, but from the summits here we see it is huge.
Lorene W6LOR and Mike K6STR call this summit the “Airport summit” because of its proximity to the McGee Creek airport. They later told us that they took a different route, only 1 km from the highway. They described soft sand where they were slipping backwards. It sounds like this is a quicker way to get to the summit, but not as enjoyable.
